As Spring Break Vacation comes to an end today. I can't help notice that so many of us stayed at home this year. No quick trips to the Beach or to Grandma's house. Instead staying local was all the rave. I would like to say most of us are trying to put away more money to save but mostly those mini vacations have become obsolete. There is no longer money in the budget for most. But who are we to complain we have our own backyards to explore. What are you waiting for.

My family is very lucky to live in Southern California. And through the years we have found some great spots for our family of 5 without blowing our budget. I keep in mind that my family probably like most does not like a strict schedule for family activities. Try for a minute to think of the drive time, boring stuff, and where is the food located so that your family will have a nice relaxing day. I have listed below some great ideas for activities in Southern California. But if you don't live close by you can get some great ideas to check out your own town. And just maybe you'll take a visit to Cali.

  1. Leo Carrillo located just north of Malibu you will find a haven for your entire family, even your dog. Leashed Dogs are allowed. My boys love the Tide pools(Winter/Fall), numerous caves to walk through and hikes. Park right off PCH and take a trail down to the beach. If you are feeling adventous you go through the Caves to find your own private beach if you're lucky. Make sure you bring a packed lunch and drinks. No Refreshments Bathrooms are located near the campground. You can go all year round, just pack jackets. It's a totally free activity that will make a lasting memory. Don't forget the camera!

  2. Long Beach Aquarium located in Long Beach. Words can not express how wonderful this aquarium is. You simply lost track of time watching the marine life. Tickets can be pricey so check our the site for $5.00 off each ticket, or if you have an Entertainment Book use the coupon, and finally check the bigger warehouse stores in California. During off seasons check the site for FREE DAYS! On Thursday Nights you can walk in for free during special times.

  3. Santa Monica Pier. When I tell my kids that were heading to The Santa Monica Pier the screams begin. At the pier you can leisurely stroll the boardwalk taking in the sites of fishing, carnival games, roller coasters, food and many many entertainers. You are allowed to fish off the pier without a license, so pack the poles. If you dare enter the Carnival side of the pier be prepared to put down some change. We purchase the wrist bands for the kids and they ran ride till closing. Best deal by far. Again if you have an Entertainment Book use the coupon for 50% off. Who doesn't like being a Ferris Wheel at night with the light s dancing on the ocean underneath . That sounds very romantic now that I think about it.

  4. Planetarium in Griffith Park. Yes if you didn't already know it has been completely remodeled. Newer and much better. Parking is available or you can take the bus. Make sure you bring along a picnic lunch and you can veg on the front lawns while the kids run till their exhausted. Going through the entire museum in one day may not be for you but don't miss catching one of the shows. Our favorite is Centered in the Universe. Cost per ticket is $7.00- and under. Great time to rest those tired feet while you are traveling through time.

  5. Travel Town in Griffith Park. If you or the kids have a likening for Trains this is for you. The museum and grounds are completely free. Step back into the 1950's and see the cars and railroad locomotives they used. Our favorite activity is being able to climb onto the Trains. Make sure you hop onto the miniature train ride and you'll get a complete view of the grounds for only $ 2.50. The park is open everyday except Christmas. There are limited refreshments so make sure you pack a picnic.

In the next week I will keep posting our favorite hot spots.
